What is a Co-operative Playgroup? |
![]() |
A co-operative playgroup offers a unique opportunity for parents to be involved in their child's first school experiences. By putting their time and energy into the school, parents make it their own and help shape it into a warm and secure social environment in which their children learn.
The classroom operates under the direction of trained ECE (Early Childhood Education) teachers who determine the curriculum and schedule of the program. Parents enrich the program by contributing their time on committees, duty days, and optional fundraising. However, unlike many co-operatives, CCPC does not require parents to staff the classroom alongside the teachers.
CCPC's parent responsibilities include:
- Membership on one of a variety of committees such as cleaning, newsletter, or special events. There is a committee to meet every member's schedule and interest!
- A rotational snack/duty day in which parents provide a snack that is nut and meat free. In addition, the duty parent provides assistance at the end of the class by tidying the classroom and helping children with their coats and boots during the winter months. This occurs approximately once every four to six weeks.
- Attendance at general meetings and parent information evenings.
By fulfilling these responsibilities, parents ensure the smooth operation of a quality program for their children. At the same time it provides parents with an opportunity to meet, socialize, and work with a diverse group of parents from their community. A co-operative is truly a wonderful preschool setting in which both parent and child can enjoy an educational family experience. We hope you'll join us!
